What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?

Yoga uses the body to connect with the mind and inner self, while Pilates uses mindfulness to connect to the inner workings of the body. Pilates focuses not so much on the spiritual element and flexibility, more on building muscle to support the skeleton.

So, if you have been to a Yoga class and were unable to find that spiritual connection, want a strong core, or are looking for a better understanding of how to draw on specific muscles and how the mechanics of your body works, Pilates might be the exercise of choice for you.

Flexibility is nothing without strength.

What is the history of Pilates?

Pilates was conceived by Joseph Pilates who was born 1883 in Germany. Originally called Contrology, he developed a series of exercises while being held at an internment camp on The Isle of Man during the First World War working with his fellow inmates. He believed that there was a strong link between mental and physical fitness.

In 1925 Joseph Pilates immigrated to the United States. On the boat he met his future wife, Clara. They soon established a devoted following in the local dance and performing arts community of New York. Devotees included Martha Graham and George Balanchine. The society women of the day soon followed.

What should I wear?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothing which has a stretch. Try not to wear anything with excess fabric — enabling the teacher to see what’s going on in your body. If wearing shorts you may want to wear running tights or leggings underneath to protect your modesty. Thin layers are preferable — the more we move the warmer we get.

Socks are optional for matwork but may need to be taken off for the odd exercise. Sticky socks must be worn in The Studio but can be purchased during your visit if you don't yet have a pair. Please be aware that zips in clothing such as running leggings are forbidden on the equipment as they can cause damage.

What should I bring?

Many people find it preferable to bring their own mat. A yoga mat will do but even better is a Pilates mat which tend to be a bit thicker/spongier which is easier on the bones. If you do not have a mat and require one to be supplied please let me know. Please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
